我的工作是为科技书画插图,而且大部分是以植物标本为依据的黑白线描图。大凡从事画画的人,对画标本都不屑一顾,我却觉得难,不下大力气做不好。我习惯坐冷板凳,喜欢在孤独的沉思中寻求乐趣。1979年,由中国美协和中国科协联合主办的全国科普美展在北京举办,我的两组插图分获二等奖和三等奖,主办单位有人告诉我,张仃先生看了我的画,想调我到中央工艺美院工作,问我意向如何。我觉得人贵有自知之明,不该见异思迁,况且自己还有很多想做的事没有做,舍不得丢开。再说,万一去了新地方,达不到张仃先生的期望值,岂不耽误别人的事?还是继续坐我的冷板凳吧。那时候功利心极少,只想把事情做好,不知不觉三十多年过去了,我从青年时代一直画到退休。
